When the USDA was expanding their Bio-Containment Agriculture building in Ames, IA, they wanted to select an experienced mechanical contracting partner. They chose ACI Mechanical, a Comfort Systems USA company. The CSUSA team:
Provided value engineering to lower budget costs
Spent more than 4,000 man hours detailing drawings of systems prior to installation
Worked diligently through several obstacles and setbacks
Installed more than 90,000 lbs. of galvanized and stainless steel duct work
The facility is used to contain highly contagious diseases. The ambient construction temperature could not drop
below 55°F requiring the building to be constructed within an air supported fabric structure. ACI provided and installed a temporary heating system for the air structure.
Due to the amount and complexity of some of the equipment to be installed, ACI spent more than 4,000 man hours detailing installation drawings of the mechanical systems. This allowed ACI to pre-fabricate off site and send sub-assemblies to the project jobsite, enhancing the efficiency of on-site construction.
ACI's field crews installed more than 90,000 pounds of galvanized and stainless steel duct work, 29 air handling units and 23 stainless steel stacks. Plumbing crews installed 9,300 feet of reinforced fiberglass pipe, 78 stainless steel trench drains, 120 stainless steel floor drains and 34 plumbing HEPA filter boxes. Piping crews installed more than 10,700 feet of hydronic piping for the building's heating and cooling systems. The ACI team did this all within an $8,500,000 budget on the 156,000 sq. ft. building.
