Cleveland FoodBank was building a 130,000 sq. ft. facility on a brownfield site. After the project had begun, the non-profit had the opportunity to apply for and receive a $100,000 grant if their facility met LEED® New Construction certification requirements. Comfort Systems USA Ohio was Cleveland Food Bank's design-build mechanical contractor for the project. The CSUSA team:
Was able to quickly change scope to meet LEED requirements
Used an environmentally responsible refrigerant
Installed energy efficient HVAC equipment
Cleveland Food Bank relied on Comfort Systems USA Ohio to quickly adjust the HVAC scope, mid-project, to meet LEED New Construction requirements. Due to Comfort Systems USA - Ohio's efforts, Cleveland Food Bank was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation as well as silver certification under the LEED New Construction system.
Comfort Systems USA Ohio selected mechanical air handlers that used R-134a refrigerant, added CO2 sensors to all return air ducts for demand ventilation requirements, and supplied the necessary documentation to the LEED administrator in order to expedite the process.
The end result was a a LEED certified building. An energy management system controlling HVAC and lighting was installed making the Cleveland Food Bank a "smart building." The high efficiency HVAC systems use an environmentally sensitive refrigerant to meet LEED pre-requisites.
