Longwood University in Farmville, VA was building a Recreational Center for their students and wanted to meet the requirements of LEED® Silver certification. The building's green features include waterless urinals, low-flow showers and lavatories which reduced water use by 40 percent; HVAC equipment free of ozone-depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbons and Halons; a carbon dioxide monitoring system to help provide adequate ventilation; and walk-off mats at main entrances that reduce the amount of pollutants entering the building.
The Climate Control, Inc. crew completed $1,870,000 in HVAC and plumbing work on this 74,700 sq. ft. recreational center that includes three levels with an ice rink, basketball and racquet ball courts, gyms and dancing rooms, a climbing wall and locker rooms.
The team expertly installed steam fired hot water converters from a central system, two 140 ton packaged chillers, five energy recovery air handler units and a site steam tunnel. In doing so, they helped the project achieve LEED Gold certification.
